The Click
In a recent conversation with a friend, an interesting topic came up: the importance of the relationship between therapist and client. How do you know if the therapist you’ve chosen is the right one? What are your expectations of the person you are sharing your darkest secrets or moments with? Are you supposed to “click” with the therapist?
The relationship between a therapist and client is a special connection with strong boundaries. Just like any relationship, you have to feel a sense of comfort and safety with the professional you have chosen to work with. You trust us with some of your most personal thoughts, fears, and joys. Ensuring that you “click” with your therapist is a must!
I’ve always felt, as a Licensed Professional Counselor, that I have to be as real as I can be. Who I am as a person is who I am as your therapist. My being genuine helps create that safe and comfortable space that allows you to open up and work through your challenges and obtain goals. If the expectations of my own relationships are to be real, hold me accountable, and help me face truths that are difficult, I should expect that from a therapist – so that is what I expect of myself for my clients. The click is real and can be the key to finding peace and gaining perspective.
