Sun Show

Every Sunday morning, I tune into CBS and watch “Sunday Morning”; often affectionately referred to as “Sun Show” in my family, which I will explain shortly. This routine came from my dad saying “hey, watch this show, it’s a break from the news.” So, every Sunday morning, I make my coffee and watch Sunday Morning.

This 90 minute show is a compilation of short segments of what’s going on in the world but without the doom, gloom, violence, and negativity the news can so often display. At the end of each segment, they have different depictions of the sun. Sometimes the sun is made of sea shells, or painted in watercolor, or sections of stained glass. It’s always fun to see what sun is coming after each story.

Recently, there was a segment on an artist I’ve never heard of before and his is work affected me on a very personal level. The artist’s name is Charles Mackesy, a British man who’s style is different than anything I’ve ever seen. His sleek strokes of watercolor paint amidst messages of positivity and warmth in dark black ink. I am writing this blog after seeing a new post of his on Facebook.

I don’t know about any of you but I’m finding this holiday season a little less jolly as I miss my family. The pandemic is keeping us separated and a Zoom Christmas is what we have decided is best for us. The art piece I saw this morning says “ ‘I can’t see a way through’, said the boy. ‘Can you see the next step?’ ‘Yes. Just take that’, said the horse.”

As I’m finding it hard to be get into the spirit of this holiday season, this painting provided needed direction and perspective. It reminded me that even though I can’t see where I’m going and this path of Zoom is hazy and frustrating, I need to just take the next step. We will come through and reunite.  I found peace by gaining perspective by way of a beautiful watercolor. Thank you, Mr. Mackesy.
